Today, I got another Keratin treatment!
This is my third since January of 2013.
I’ve written about the process extensively here and here.
I got my first one in January 2013, another in October of 2013 then again today, June 9th.
I’m going to try to get them more often moving forward, but honestly, the salon does such a good job of keeping my hair straight between treatments, I don’t realize it’s time for a new one until it’s waaay past time. (The treatment is supposed to last 3-5 months, depending on lifestyle and maintenance.) This was never, ever the case when I getting relaxers. I waited a long time, but it was incredibly obvious because relaxers grow out. Keratin treatments gradually wash out so there isn’t this huge difference in texture.
Today, I was a hair model for a training class at J. Bentley Studio and Spa about how to apply Keratin Complex Treatments. J. Bentley is a hair sponsor for CW Columbus, so this is an incredible “CW Star” perk :). Taira Harris is a certified Keratin trainer and the treatment is gaining in popularity so she trained the other stylist how to do it too.
As a sidenote: I’ve never worked at a salon, but it seems like J. Bentley does a fantastic job of keeping their clients trained and up on the latest and greatest products for their clients!
In the class today, I was getting the Keratin Complex treatment and Sabrina – another hair model and also a nail esthetician there – was getting the Keratin Advanced Glycolic Smoothing Treatment. There are very important differences between the treatments, but after today’s class, the stylists know how to do both!
Of course, I took TONS of pictures:

Before pic…and attentive stylists!

The key to making a Keratin last: PRODUCTS! May as well not get the treatment if you’re not going to get the right products to maintain it.
Now that it’s in, for the next three days, I must keep my hair bone straight.
I am not allowed to get my hair wet (which I try my best to NEVER do anyway!), put my hair in a ponytail, wear a hat or even tuck the hair behind my ears. It must stay stick straight for three days while the treatment “cures” then I will go back to the salon and get it washed and styled.
I honestly love Keratin treatments. They are way better than relaxers (no more scalp burning and scabs!)
They’re on the pricey side, but right now J. Bentley has an amazing 50% off special going on with this Groupon: http://www.groupon.com/deals/j-bentley-studio-spa-2
It’s worth it!
Because of multiple reasons, including your blog, I stopped getting relaxers almost a year ago and began getting Keratin treatments–I feel like my hair is so much healthier now than it was before. Just wanted to say thanks!

Thank you! Thank You! Thank you! I have been researching transitioning hair but all I could find were stories/blogs about curly hair. I want to stop relaxing my hair but I still want it straight. I was becoming frustrated because I couldn’t find any advice. After hour and hours I finally stumbled on to your site. I read your story about being frustrated to the point you wanted a relaxer to you having a keratin treatment. You really gave me life and I thank you. I am 14 weeks post relaxer and tonight I am getting my first keratin treatment. I have been nervous for the past couple of weeks but your blog has eased my mind. Thank you so much!
